Put the Dog in the Trunk

Kim Kilpatrick with Put the Dog in the Trunk

Thursday, March 28, 2024 7:30pm ET | Blackbox Studio, Arts Court (2 Daly Ave) and On Demand

On a cool, sunny day in February 2023, Kim confidently finds her way out of the Calgary Tower after a performance of her one-woman show about guide dogs. Kim is partway through her 23-show run in this new city, where the shows are going well and where she and her guide dog Ginger, have conquered their new surroundings.

Kim and Ginger head to the waiting taxi, happy and proud after a great show. Then, suddenly, with one refusal and one phrase, her world turns upside down. “Put the dog in the trunk,” the cab driver says. No amount of persuasion was changing this driver’s mind.

Kim’s new show “Put the Dog in the Trunk” details her personal rollercoaster journey of advocacy while in Calgary, intertwined with vivid characters from her childhood, school days, and working life. What did these people teach Kim about finding her voice, standing up for herself, deciding when to fight, and when to conserve her energy for other priorities?

In true Kim style, the stories in “Put the Dog in the Trunk” are shocking, funny, insightful, and memorable. A show not to be missed.

Kim Kilpatrick first became enchanted with the art of storytelling while attending the Ottawa Storytelling Festival and Beginner’s Workshop in 2001. She has worked to become a professional storyteller ever since. Although Kim enjoys telling stories of all genres to audiences of all ages, she is proud to be an artist with a disability and loves creating and featuring her autobiographical work.  Her solo shows include Flying in the Dark (2011), Raising Stanley/life with Tulia (2018), and Dangerous Touch: The Adventures of Being Blind in a Social Distance World (2022). Kim is also an artist with Radical Connections, bringing storytelling to palliative and long-term care and people with dementia.
