Of Tyrants and Monsters: The Story of Perseus and the Medusa

Friday, March 18, 2022 7:30PM ET | Stéphanie Bénéteau with Of Tyrants and Monsters: The Story of Perseus and the Medusa (Black Box Studio, Arts Court and Live stream broadcast)

When King Acrisius learns through the oracle that his unborn grandson will kill him one day, he locks his daughter Danae in a bronze tower, thus stopping her from ever having children. But one of the gods of Olympus transforms himself into golden rain and visits beautiful Danae in her tower, giving her a son whom she names Perseus. Thus begins the myth of Perseus, one of Greek Antiquity’s greatest heroes, who faces the horrible Medusa of the petrifying gaze and meets shameless nymphs, fierce sea monsters, and cruel tyrants before finally facing his grandfather and his destiny.

Storyteller Stéphanie Bénéteau brings the myth back to its original form, oral storytelling, in a coming-of-age story full of adventure, humour, and emotion that gives new life to this age-old myth.

Stéphanie Bénéteau studied literature and education before finding her true vocation as a storyteller, a career she has been pursuing full-time since 1996. Her repertoire includes erotic stories, stories from the Arabian Nights, medieval legends, and Greek myths, as well as a rich collection of folktales involving girls and women. Stéphanie tells ancient myths and legends from the oral tradition in a lyrical, feminine voice touched with a hint of saucy humour.
