Marta Singh

A passionate storyteller born and raised in Argentina, Marta brings luminous magic, poetic language, and deep emotional impact to traditional, literary, and personal material.

In 2011, 2 women productions premiered Landscapes of Silence: A Daughter’s Story, Marta’s first solo performance, developed thanks to the Emerging Artist Grant awarded to her in 2009 by the City of Ottawa. In 2010, Marta debuted in her native city of Buenos Aires, where she’s been hired to perform at schools, concert series, and book fairs. Since 2005, she has performed regularly at the Fourth Stage of the National Arts Centre and at Canadian storytelling festivals.

Marta performs in English, in Spanish, and in her own interplay of both. Always concerned to deepen her connection to her art, she studies and takes workshops with every master artist whose path shines a true light.

Material

Deeply rooted in the old folktales and wondertales, Marta’s repertoire also includes stories crafted from life, literature gems and Argentinean legends.

Her adult audiences have grown younger with the years and now include young adults and children.

Her storytelling and story-based workshops cultivate the oral tradition as a powerful art form, address the WHY and HOW-TO communicate through story, vertebrate experience and information into story, and explore the stories that we – as individuals, communities, organizations – are helping tell or silence with our voice.

It’s theatre in its most essential form. It upholds the oral tradition of telling our history. It’s drama, it’s excitement. It's a one-woman show of performance art filled with enchantment, beauty, humour and tragedy. It’s movement, gesture and the persuasive power of the human voice."

“Words drop in beauty. Her expressiveness is unique."

"Spellbinding. Marta's voice is hers and hers alone."

"Superb. Spare beautiful language ... managing to express that which defies expression."

"Stunningly brave. It was as if the audience was collectively holding its breath."
