Thursday, February 25 at 7:30PM | Shawn Anthony with Apse the Gate (Live stream broadcast from Blackbox Studio, Arts Court)

Storyteller Shawn Anthony will transport you to a cozy Newfoundland kitchen table as he spins a yarn or two in Apse the Gate: Stories of Leaving and Finding Home. Accompanied by the music of Michael Coady on guitar and Peter Hodgins on mandolin, Shawn explores the tension between his family’s traditional way of life on the East Coast and the contemporary world they now find themselves living in. From the old-world genteel found at his grandparent’s home on the shores of Fogo Island, to adventures in the wild west for Stampede to finding love and building a family, Shawn’s stories of growing up and still trying to find out what being an adult actually is will make you laugh and cry, and perhaps even give you a glimpse into a world that might no longer exist, but shouldn’t be forgotten. These beautiful stories are for anyone who has ever set out on a journey to define what “home” means to them.

A native of Fogo Island, Shawn Anthony’s storytelling ability is a legacy passed down from his ancestors who spent their lives working on the ocean. As a child, Shawn moved to Scarborough, Ontario with his family where he spent his life trying to figure out what and where home was and where he belonged. Currently, Shawn’s home is in Ottawa with the people he loves most in the world. You can find out more about him at apsethegate.ca. Shawn has been a regular participant at OST’s monthly (un)told storytelling events.
